Partnering for Impact: MORIFA and the MORINGA Project for Poor Farming Families
June 16, 2026
Behind MORIFA’s commercial moringa supply chain sits a deeper mission: helping lift poor farming families out of poverty. That mission is shared with Wahana Visi Indonesia and World Vision Australia, with whom MORIFA partnered on the MORINGA project — “More Income Generated for Poor Families in Indonesia.”
The project was funded by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), and ran from 2017 to 2022 across some of eastern Indonesia’s least economically developed provinces, including Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara and North Moluccas.
A Market-Systems Approach to Poverty
MORINGA set an ambitious goal: to develop a network of agribusiness partners and increase the income of 4,000 farming families. It used an inclusive market systems development (iMSD) approach — rather than simply handing out aid, the project worked to make markets work better for the poor by bringing in committed private-sector partners.
MORIFA’s Role
In the independent impact assessment of the project, MORIFA is named as one of the key private-sector partners — a moringa off-taker providing reliable market access for smallholder moringa growers. By acting as a dependable buyer, MORIFA helps farmers connect to fair prices and a sustainable demand for their harvest, so that planting moringa becomes a genuine income opportunity rather than a gamble.
The evaluation found that introducing new buyers into these markets improved prices for farmers and helped households raise their incomes. For MORIFA, it is proof that a commercial supply chain and a social mission can be built on the same foundation: a fair, transparent market for Indonesian moringa.
