Before sludge from wastewater treatment can be dewatered and disposed of, it must be conditioned — usually with chemicals like ferric chloride. This study searched for a cheaper, natural conditioner and tested oil-free Moringa oleifera seed.
Oil was removed from moringa seed using a Soxhlet apparatus, and the resulting de-oiled seed (the “marc”) was tested as a sludge conditioner against ordinary moringa seed and conventional ferric chloride.
Key findings
- Oil-free moringa marc conditioned sludge better than ordinary moringa seed.
- Ferric chloride still outperformed both natural options.
- Optimum conditioning dosages were 0.6% (ferric chloride), 0.80% (marc) and 1.10% (ordinary seed) of total solids.
Why it matters for MORIFA: This is a direct use for our oil-pressing by-product: the de-oiled seed cake (marc) becomes a functional input for wastewater sludge treatment, adding a revenue stream to a residue.
Caveat: results are specific to the digested domestic sludge tested; ferric chloride remained the stronger conditioner.
