Moringa Seed Extract for Treating Shrimp-Pond Effluent

Aquaculture effluent is a significant source of water pollution, and treating it cheaply helps reduce the industry’s environmental impact. This study evaluated Moringa oleifera seed aqueous extract for treating shrimp-pond effluent.

Effluent from Litopenaeus vannamei (whiteleg shrimp) ponds was treated with moringa seed extract at ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 seeds per litre, and the physico-chemical characteristics were monitored before and over the 24 hours after dosing.

Key findings

Why it matters for MORIFA: Aquaculture is a major industry across Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Moringa seed as a low-cost treatment for pond effluent connects our product to a large regional B2B market on our doorstep.

Caveat: a pond-effluent study at specific dose ratios; scale-up depends on pond size and effluent load.
