Moringa’s antioxidant power comes largely from flavonoids — and quantifying them precisely matters for quality control and product claims. This study developed a method to measure the key flavonoids in Moringa oleifera leaves.
Using reverse-phase ion-pairing HPLC (at 370 nm) and following International Conference on Harmonisation guidelines, the team optimised extraction to maximise the yield of myricetin, quercetin and kaempferol.
Key points
- Moringa leaf is rich in the antioxidant flavonoids myricetin, quercetin and kaempferol.
- An HPLC method was developed and validated to quantify them.
- Optimised extraction (reflux with dilute HCl) maximised flavonoid yield.
Caveat: an analytical-method study; flavonoid levels vary with material and method.
