Why formulators keep coming back to moringa oil
Moringa seed oil (INCI: Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil) is one of the most stable natural lipids available to cosmetic formulators — historically prized as “ben oil” by perfumers precisely because it resists rancidity and carries scent beautifully. This article covers the properties that matter at the formulation bench, what to check on a supplier’s spec sheet, and where the oil performs best.
Fatty-acid profile: the source of its stability
Typical cold-pressed moringa seed oil composition:
- Oleic acid (C18:1) — ~65–75%. High-oleic character gives excellent skin affinity, spreadability and a silky, non-greasy skin feel.
- Behenic acid (C22:0) — ~4–7%, unusually high for a plant oil. Behenic acid is the conditioning agent behind the oil’s smoothing, occlusive-light performance in hair and skin care.
- Palmitic + stearic acids — ~10–15% combined, adding body and structure.
- Low polyunsaturates — linoleic/linolenic typically under 3–4% combined, which is exactly why oxidative stability is so strong.
The result: a long shelf life (commonly 24+ months), a high oxidative-stability index versus argan or rosehip, and far less need for antioxidant support in the finished formula.
Where it performs in formulation
- Facial oils and serums — fast-absorbing emollient; pairs well with actives that need a stable carrier. Our own Moringa Face Serum is built on it.
- Hair care — behenic acid smooths cuticles; used in masks, leave-ins and scalp oils.
- Lip care and balms — oxidation resistance keeps flavour/scent clean over shelf life.
- Massage and body oils — slow, elegant slip without the greasy after-feel of high-linoleic oils.
- Natural perfumery — the classic ben-oil role: a near-odourless, stable carrier that fixes fragrance.
Cold-pressed vs solvent-extracted: insist on the difference
Cold pressing (mechanical extraction below nutrient-degrading temperatures, no hexane) preserves tocopherols, sterols and the oil’s natural stability. Solvent-extracted or refined-bleached-deodorised (RBD) oil is cheaper but loses part of the minor-component profile that makes moringa oil worth formulating with. For “natural”, “clean beauty” and organic-certified lines, cold-pressed virgin oil is the only grade that supports the claim.
What to demand on the spec sheet
- Extraction method (cold-pressed virgin vs refined) and filtration grade
- Fatty-acid profile by GC, batch-specific
- Peroxide value and free fatty acid (acid value) — the freshness indicators
- Heavy metals and microbiology
- Organic certification with verifiable certificate number, if you make organic claims
- Origin and traceability — single-origin oil gives you batch-to-batch consistency; blended-origin oil does not
