How moringa seed is prepared affects how well it works as a coagulant. This study compared shelled and unshelled Moringa oleifera seed for clarifying turbid water under identical conditions.
Raw turbid water was treated with 50 mL of moringa aqueous solution (prepared at 40 g/L) using shelled and unshelled seed, then analysed for turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS) and total suspended solids (TSS).
Key findings
- Unshelled moringa removed 98% of turbidity; shelled removed 96%.
- Residual turbidity reached 19 NTU (unshelled) versus 38 NTU (shelled).
- Both forms substantially lowered TDS and TSS — both are effective coagulants.
Caveat: a single turbid-water comparison; optimal dosing varies with source-water turbidity.
