Antioxidants protect the body — and foods — from the damage caused by free radicals. This study measured and compared the antioxidant capacity of different parts of Moringa oleifera, a plant prized for its polyphenols.
Extracts from various plant parts were analysed for total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activity.
Key findings
- Moringa parts vary in their phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant levels.
- Methanolic extracts showed the highest TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity.
- Polyphenol-rich moringa offers dietary protection against oxidative stress.
Caveat: antioxidant values depend on extraction solvent and plant part; in-vitro measures.
