The composition of moringa seed and oil varies by origin, and detailed specifications matter to buyers. This study characterised the physico-chemical properties of Moringa oleifera seed and seed oil from a wild source in the Kohat forests of Pakistan.
The seeds and their extracted oil were analysed for proximate composition and a full suite of oil-quality parameters.
Key figures
- Oil yield 34.80%; protein 31.65%, fibre 7.54%, moisture 8.90%, ash 6.53%.
- Oil quality: iodine value 68.63, refractive index 1.4571, density 0.9032 g/cm³, saponification value 181.4, unsaponifiable matter 0.74%, acidity 0.81%.
- Oxidation parameters (induction period, specific extinctions, peroxide value) were also measured.
Caveat: values are for one wild Pakistani provenance; cultivated and regional material will differ.
