This study, carried out at the Wad Medani Waterworks in Sudan, compared Moringa oleifera seed against the common synthetic coagulant poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) for purifying Blue Nile water — directly testing whether the natural option can compete with the industrial standard.
Four samples (raw water, whole moringa seed powder, hexane-extracted moringa cake, and PAC) were compared using the standard jar test.
Key findings
- Hexane-extracted moringa cake at 50 ppm reduced turbidity from 1650 NTU to 6.36 NTU — outperforming whole seed (12.8 NTU).
- Unlike PAC, moringa did not significantly change pH or conductivity.
- PAC raised chloride levels in the treated water; moringa did not.
