Aquaculture effluent is a significant source of water pollution, and treating it cheaply helps reduce the industry’s environmental impact. This study evaluated Moringa oleifera seed aqueous extract for treating shrimp-pond effluent.
Effluent from Litopenaeus vannamei (whiteleg shrimp) ponds was treated with moringa seed extract at ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 seeds per litre, and the physico-chemical characteristics were monitored before and over the 24 hours after dosing.
Key findings
- A clear flocculation process began soon after the extract was added.
- Clarification reached its maximum about 24 hours after dosing.
- Moringa extract improved the physico-chemical quality of the shrimp-pond effluent.
Caveat: a pond-effluent study at specific dose ratios; scale-up depends on pond size and effluent load.
