Low-Cost Surface-Water Purification with Moringa Seed and Bio-Sand Filtration

2016

This study developed a simple, inexpensive water-purification method for rural surface water, built around Moringa oleifera seed powder as the natural coagulant.

Surface water from ponds, canals, lakes and rivers was treated with moringa seed powder combined with scallop powder (2:1) for 10 minutes, then passed through folded sari cloth and/or natural bio-sand filtration.

Key findings

Why it matters for MORIFA: A complete, low-cost treatment train built on moringa — with safety verified — is exactly the evidence humanitarian and rural-water programmes look for when sourcing moringa seed.

Caveat: the method also uses scallop powder; component supply and dosing must be considered for scale-up.
