Moringa oleifera is a multipurpose tree increasingly promoted across developing countries. Its seeds contain water-soluble, positively charged proteins that act as an effective coagulant. This study tested that capability on river water.
Water quality of the Gebeng River was examined before and after treatment with Moringa oleifera seed, measuring turbidity, dissolved oxygen and bacterial growth; the seed’s oil was also extracted.
Key findings
- Turbidity was removed by 85–94%.
- Dissolved oxygen improved from about 2.58 to 4.00 mg/L.
- Moringa seed showed high efficiency in reducing and preventing bacterial growth; seed oil yield was 12.78% (ethanol extraction).
