As livestock farming grows, so does the volume of animal wastewater — from feces and urine — that is frequently dumped untreated into nearby rivers. This study tested Moringa oleifera seed as a treatment, focusing on total dissolved solids (TDS), a key water-quality indicator.
Moringa seeds have a coagulant effect thanks to their cationic (positively charged) proteins, which bind dissolved and suspended matter so it can settle out.
Key points
- Moringa seed acts as a cationic natural coagulant suited to reducing TDS.
- It targets the dissolved organic and inorganic load in livestock wastewater.
- It offers smallholders an accessible way to treat animal-farm effluent before discharge.
Caveat: focused on TDS in livestock wastewater; other parameters and scale-up need separate evaluation.
