Moringa, A Useful Plant That Is Easy To Plant

Who would have thought that the Moringa oleifera tree, which is often found in Asia, is being a hot topic? Maybe you haven’t planted it on purpose, but if you live in a hot area, you can start observing the surroundings. This tree can be found with the characteristics that we will discuss in the following review and their benefits for our lives. Come on, watch!

Moringa Tree Characteristics and Benefits

This plant can grow up to a height of approximately 10 meters. It is relatively fast in its growing period and you can find it by observing its characteristics as follows:

  • Typical Leaf Shape

The leaves of this plant have a distinctive shape, namely ovate, small in size, and a compound stalk. We can use it for cooking or usually processed as a medical product. The benefits obtained if we consume them include increasing metabolism, strengthening the immune system, beautifying the skin, making the brain and eyes fresh, improving digestion, increasing energy, supporting a healthy circulatory system, anti-inflammation, and maintaining blood sugar stability.

  • The form of flowers

The distinctive aroma of this plant is produced from its flowers that bloom all year round. The flower sheath is green and the flowers are usually yellowish-white.

  • Appearance of Fruit

In Indonesia, it is common to use the fruit of this plant by processing it as a soup. The fruit is known as “potato” and can be harvested almost monthly if exposed to continuous good weather throughout the year.

Planting and Reproduction

Even in areas with minimal water, dry, and extremely hot weather, this plant can survive. If we plant it, we have to keep it from overwatering. Planting is done from seeds, preferably starting from the selection of pods from the fruit that looks good and is not too old.

We can open the fruit of this plant to get the seeds and then dry it naturally in the sun for a day. After that lift and move to the shade for later sowing. Before sowing, make sure to soak the seeds in warm water. You can also tell a seed of good quality if it sinks and doesn’t float.

The seeding area can be a tray, polybag, or directly on the ground as long as the area is shaded. You can sample the planting media by mixing the soil with manure. Then the seeds are sown and watered regularly so that they are always moist but not too wet. You can see the sprouts start growing after 7-12 days. Furthermore, you can move it if the shoot of this plant has reached a height of 15 cm. Can be put in a polybag before going to permanent planting media.

Another method for growing them is by using stem cuttings. We can cut one stalk from a medium-aged stem with a diameter of 3 – 5 cm. You must be careful if you are beginners to plant because the knife used must be very sharp. The cut size is 30-50 cm and horizontally so that later it will grow many roots. Technically, the next method is almost the same as planting starting from seeds.

These cuttings should be planted at a depth of 30-40 cm. We recommend that a mixture of soil and fertilizer be prepared in advance for a week. It is not difficult to care for this Moringa plant, because it does not need chemical fertilizers and also has minimal pests.
