This study set out to confirm, under controlled conditions, the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera seed powder as a coagulant for water purification — a material that is commonly available in rural communities across Africa.
Using a Completely Randomised Design, the researchers tested moringa seed powder at loading doses of 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 g/L, with aluminium sulphate (alum) as the conventional benchmark coagulant.
Key findings
- Moringa seed powder was confirmed as an effective natural coagulant for clarifying water.
- It was benchmarked directly against alum, the standard chemical coagulant.
- Being locally available and low-cost, it is well-suited to rural water treatment.
Caveat: a controlled jar-style study; field dosing and consistent seed supply determine real-world results.
