Many existing water-purification devices are expensive, hard to access in low-income communities, and can harm aquatic life. This study explored an affordable alternative pairing two natural materials: Moringa oleifera seed and coconut-shell activated carbon (CSAC).
Moringa seeds contain a cationic protein (M. oleifera cationic protein, MOCP) that acts as a coagulant, binding to toxins and pulling them out of water; combining it with activated carbon targets both heavy metals and bacteria.
Key points
- Moringa’s coagulant protein (MOCP) binds toxins through adsorption, forming larger flocs that settle out.
- Combining moringa with activated carbon targets both heavy-metal and bacterial contamination.
- The materials are low-cost and accessible for under-served communities.
Caveat: an early-career research study; real-world device performance depends on water chemistry and contact design.
