Moringa Leaf Powder in Broiler Chicken Feed: Growth, Blood Chemistry & Meat Quality

Poultry is the world’s most-consumed meat, and producers face constant pressure to cut costs and reduce reliance on antibiotic growth promoters, increasingly restricted over antimicrobial-resistance concerns. That drives a search for natural feed additives that keep birds healthy and growing without drugs — and Moringa oleifera leaf powder, rich in protein, vitamins and antioxidants, is a leading candidate.

This study, published in Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology by scientists at India’s Central Avian Research Institute, ran a controlled feeding trial to test whether moringa leaf could take on some of that role — without hurting the metric every producer watches: growth rate.

What the study did

420 day-old broiler chicks were divided across six diets and raised for 42 days: a standard corn–soybean control, an antibiotic-growth-promoter diet, and four diets with moringa leaf powder at 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. The team measured growth, blood biochemistry, gut microflora and meat quality.

Key findings

The takeaway: moringa leaf works in broiler feed at up to 2% as a natural additive that maintains growth while improving gut health and meat keeping-quality — a credible step toward antibiotic-free production.

Why it matters for MORIFA: Animal feed is one of the largest-volume uses for moringa leaf, and feed mills buy in bulk. Evidence that moringa maintains growth while improving meat stability is exactly the reassurance livestock buyers need before committing to volume.

Caveat: results apply to broilers at the rates tested; optimal levels vary by species and ration. Growth effects were neutral here — gains were in gut health and meat quality.
